Chapter Six

KINSLEY

It was only three short weeks after I’d walked down the aisle with Sullivan, and I already found myself struggling with feelings for him. Not that I was completely to blame; he’d been the first one to change things up between us while we were in Australia for what was supposed to have been a working “honeymoon.” He’d stuck to his rule of work being his top priority during our first week there, but after we’d spent an incredible day sightseeing together he’d surprised me by squeezing me into his busy schedule several more times. We’d hit all the popular spots, each outing better than the last, and every single one followed by an insanely hot round of sex.

So much sex that I wasn’t sure if my exhaustion was because of jet lag or if it was due to all the extra exercise I’d been getting in bed. Even with how much I was looking forward to accompanying Sullivan to a charity event the night after we returned home, I was worried I might fall asleep in my meal. Then again, I could probably depend on the chemistry that burned between us to keep me on my toes, since I was always hyperaware of him.

The fire between us hadn’t died down at all since we’d returned home, but I’d barely seen Sullivan since he’d spent all of today in the office. It was almost more than I could do to stop myself from ripping his tuxedo from his body, even though we were surrounded by hundreds of people. When he set his hand on my lower back as we moved towards our table, a jolt of awareness moved through me. His fingers flexed against the silky material of my dress, and I glanced up at him, almost stumbling when I saw the blaze of heat in his hazel eyes.

He bent his head low to whisper in my ear, “You’re too damn beautiful. I’ve had to glare down at least half a dozen men since we walked in the door because they were checking out my wife.”

I shivered at the thread of possession in his tone. For a guy who’d been adamant about there being no strong emotions between us, he was sending me mixed signals. They were messing with my head because they made me think there was the possibility of more between us.

He didn’t leave my side all night, making sure I was included in the conversation at dinner and even going as far as to walk me to the restroom when I needed to go. If his parents had been present, I would have understood that he was keeping up the act for them. But without that excuse, I could only hope that it was a sign he was as confused about what was happening between us as I was.

“Dance with me?” he asked when the band started up.

“I’d love to.” I placed my hand in his, and we moved onto the dance floor.
